The following has been confirmed by our bankers: A Documentary Letter of credit (DLC) is normally used where there is a single shipment. The DLC is the bank instrument and the payment is actioned via the SWIFT message MT700. For multiple shipments within a single contract, use a Standby Letter of Credit (SBLC). In the case of the SBLC the payment is actioned via the SWIFT message MT760. An SBLC saves the buyer the cost of creating a DLC for every shipment.

A transferable Letter of Credit is more common than a non-transferable Letter of Credit.
